			<description><![CDATA[creating custom name servers is something most users of a VPS or dedicated server need to do. This is a simple task but can be a little confusing.<br />
<br />
Creating the name servers and assigning the to the the server is somthing that should take less tha half an hour, (most of the time is taken logging into your accounts).<br />
<br />
The first step is to get the ip address or address that you are going to be using on your server. Some hosting providers only give one ip address as standard, extra ip address can be paid for at a small price per month.<br />
<br />
you only really need one ip but two is better.<br />
<br />
once you have the ip address or address from you hosting provider you now need to create the glue records on the domain name.<br />
<br />
If you have a domain name that you manage yourself login to you account.<br />
<br />
once you are in you account control panel you will need to create the glue records. These are also called sub domain names. (Please not confuse these sub domain names with the sub domain names created on your server)<br />
<br />
Select the domain name you wish to create the glue records for. in the 1an1 control panel you would now click create subdomain.<br />
<br />
this is we we now choose the name server names<br />
<br />
the most common are ns1 and ns2<br />
<br />
ns1.yourdomain.co.uk<br />
ns2.yourdomain.co.uk<br />
<br />
now you will need to assign the ip address to these. If you are using a single ip address for the server add the ip address to both of these sub domain names.<br />
<br />
you have to create a minimum of two nameservers but you can create four and assign each an ip address.<br />
<br />
click save changes. These changes will now resolve around the internet. this can take upto 48 hours but will normally be ready with about 15 - 20 hours.<br />
<br />
if your registra managers the domain name for you please ask them to create glue records on your domain name and assign the ip for you.<br />
<br />
<br />
once you have done this you will need to tell your server that is should be using these. When you are installing cpanel for the first time it will ask you for two name servers.<br />
<br />
The name servers you enter are the ones we created above. enter these and then click assign A rocord.<br />
<br />
do this for both name servers.<br />
<br />
once you name servers have resolved your server is ready to run. <br />
<br />
this subject can go into much more but this is the basics and is enough for you have have your name servers created and your server up and running]]></description>

I have spent the last few months working on a torrent website. A good amount of people are now downloading movies music and more from the internet. <br />
The owners of these sites simply do not care what is on there websites, how they are used. So i decided that it was time for a clean torrent website where users can download content in a safer enviroment. I safe safer as its simply not going to happen where every torrent is perfect, but the modarators at <a href="http://www.protorrent.co.uk" target="_blank">Pro Torrent</a> try their best to check torrents, remove reported torrents and make sure there is no spamming or abuse.<br />
<br />
This goes a long way to help making a better torrent website where people can download content in a better way, leave comments on torrents and talk to the uploaders via a PM system.<br />

Have a look at the website and see what you think, we welcome all comments, before you register all users can have one free download, so go have a try.]]></description>

Most email marketing software’s have tracking capabilities that shows the sender their customers' "clicks", "forwards", and "opens" live with easy to follow reports. <title><![CDATA[https and SSL certificates]]></title>
			<link>http://www.web-application-development.info/Thread-https-and-SSL-certificates</link>
			<pubDate>Thu, 24 Feb 2011 00:22:14 +0000</pubDate>
			<guid isPermaLink="false">http://www.web-application-development.info/Thread-https-and-SSL-certificates</guid>
			<description><![CDATA[I thought I would give a quick mention on SSL (secure socket layer). More and more websites are now using https connections when you login or send data that needs to be secure over the internet. An example of a website that uses https connections is UK Landlord Registry. Any website that processes payment uses https connections.<br />
<br />
Connection over https uses a SSL which means any data leaving the browser over the internet to the server is encrypted and then decrypted at the server. This also works for the reverse, server to browser.<br />
<br />
<br />
There are a few different types of SSL certificates but I will just explain the basic domain SSL cert, how to use them and how to install them. And standard SSL cert comes in either SSL or EV SSL the only real difference between the two is that with the EV SSL you get the green address bar, higher insurance coverage and you company name on the certificate. They take the best part of a day to get and cost a lot more money. In order to get one you must produce a bank statement with your company name on it. For most purposes though a standard domain name SSL will do, you get the padlock on the address bar or bottom of the browser and they are issued with minutes.<br />
 <br />
I use <a href="http://www.globalsign.com/" target="_blank">GlobalSign</a> for mine and have never had any problems with them. It’s about £130 per year plus vat but you do get a 45 day free trial, no payment details are required in order to get a free trial.<br />
<br />
Before you proceed of to go get you SSL certificate please not, you must have your domain name on a dedicated IP. If you have not got a dedicated IP for your domain name they you can ask your hosting provider to issue you one. There is normally a cost. I charge £20 per year plus vat to have your domain name on a dedicated IP. That’s if you have a shared hosting account. <br />
<br />
I have given the instructions on setting up a SSL cert for users with cpanel or whm panel. Most hosting accounts have this. If not refer to you hosting company for instructions on setting up your SSL cert.<br />
<br />
Setting up<br />
The first thing you need to do is generate a private key to do this log into you cpanel and scroll down until you find ssl/tls manager. Once you click on that a new screen opens with 3 options in it.<br />
<br />
Select Private Keys (KEY)<br />
Generate, view, upload, or delete your private keys.<br />
<br />
Scroll down to the bottom to where a button says generate a new key, select the domain name the ssl cert is for from the dropdown list and the select the key size, 2048 is the normal one. Then click the generate key button. Make sure you save this key in note pad. Do not use word.<br />
<br />
Now click return to ssl/tls manager<br />
<br />
Select Certificate Signing Requests (CSR)<br />
Generate, view, or delete SSL certificate signing requests.<br />
<br />
fill in the small form here. note: where country is required GB for britan should be used<br />
<br />
After you have filled in the form click generate. Make sure you save this certificate signing request in note pad also. You need these later. Although you cpanel does store these it’s a very good idea to back them up at the start.<br />
<br />
You almost done. Click on return to ssl/tls manager. You are now ready to go to global seals website and order your domain ssl. Select the free trial ssl or domain ssl, they are both the same just that domain ssl you pay for now, you might as well start the free trial. They will ask you for your privet key you generated in step one and the crt signing request (certificate signing request) this is the second one you generated.<br />
<br />
You will now be asked to select an email address to verify your order. You have to choose which one, normal there is admin@yourdomain.co.uk and webmast@yourdomain.co.uk if you don’t have either of these email address you will have to go back into cpanel and create it before you continue. Once you click verify email you will get an email with a link in it to confirm your order. Click the link. Wait a few moments and your ssl cert will be emailed to you.<br />
The email containing your cert is a bit long winded but pretty simple.<br />
<br />
Here is your next step.<br />
Go back into cpanel, then ssl/tls manager and select<br />
Activate SSL on Your Web Site (HTTPS)<br />
Setup a SSL certificate to work with your site.<br />
<br />
When your first went into the ssl/tls manager this option was not there. Your server knows you are setting one up and will have stored your privet key and crt signing request.<br />
<br />
Select the domain name you are setting you the ssl on. Now if any of the boxes auto fill please remove the content. In the first box you need your crt content. This is in the email from global seal. Scroll down to the bottom of the email. You will have two chunks of code. The first one is your crt and the second is your intermediate ca bundle. Copy and past the crt contents. Remember to include the ----begin certificate--- and the ---end certificate—as with the private key and the ca bundle you must include these lines. Past the crt content to the fist box on your cpanel screen. Copy and paste the private key that you saved previously. Now copy and paste the intermediate ca bundle that was at the bottom of the email.<br />
<br />
Click install certificate. Cpanel will now run a quick check and will show a screen stating certificate installed.<br />
<br />
Click return to ssl/tls manager and select Certificates (CRT)<br />
Generate, view, upload, or delete SSL certificates.<br />
On the top of the page you can see the certificate you have installed, also the details of who its from and the expiry date of the certificate.<br />
<br />
You are now ready to test the certificate is installed correctly<br />
<br />
Open up a new page in the browser and type in you domain name that you have just installed the certificate on. Once the page has opened, on the address bar where you have http://www change this to https://www.<br />
Your page will open with a change to the address bar and a little padlock in the bottom right corner of your browser. You are now done. Your certificate is installed. Any connections made over the https:// is secure now]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[I thought I would give a quick mention on SSL (secure socket layer). More and more websites are now using https connections when you login or send data that needs to be secure over the internet. An example of a website that uses https connections is UK Landlord Registry. Any website that processes payment uses https connections.<br />
<br />
Connection over https uses a SSL which means any data leaving the browser over the internet to the server is encrypted and then decrypted at the server. This also works for the reverse, server to browser.<br />
<br />
<br />
 <br />
I use <a href="http://www.globalsign.com/" target="_blank">GlobalSign</a> for mine and have never had any problems with them. It’s about £130 per year plus vat but you do get a 45 day free trial, no payment details are required in order to get a free trial.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I have given the instructions on setting up a SSL cert for users with cpanel or whm panel. Most hosting accounts have this. If not refer to you hosting company for instructions on setting up your SSL cert.<br />
<br />
Setting up<br />
The first thing you need to do is generate a private key to do this log into you cpanel and scroll down until you find ssl/tls manager. Once you click on that a new screen opens with 3 options in it.<br />
<br />
Select Private Keys (KEY)<br />
Generate, view, upload, or delete your private keys.<br />
<br />
Scroll down to the bottom to where a button says generate a new key, select the domain name the ssl cert is for from the dropdown list and the select the key size, 2048 is the normal one. Then click the generate key button. Make sure you save this key in note pad. Do not use word.<br />
<br />
Now click return to ssl/tls manager<br />
<br />
Select Certificate Signing Requests (CSR)<br />
Generate, view, or delete SSL certificate signing requests.<br />
<br />
fill in the small form here. note: where country is required GB for britan should be used<br />
<br />
After you have filled in the form click generate. Make sure you save this certificate signing request in note pad also. You need these later. Although you cpanel does store these it’s a very good idea to back them up at the start.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Here is your next step.<br />
Go back into cpanel, then ssl/tls manager and select<br />
Activate SSL on Your Web Site (HTTPS)<br />
Setup a SSL certificate to work with your site.<br />
<br />
When your first went into the ssl/tls manager this option was not there. Your server knows you are setting one up and will have stored your privet key and crt signing request.<br />
<br />
<br />
Click install certificate. Cpanel will now run a quick check and will show a screen stating certificate installed.<br />
<br />
Click return to ssl/tls manager and select Certificates (CRT)<br />
Generate, view, upload, or delete SSL certificates.<br />
On the top of the page you can see the certificate you have installed, also the details of who its from and the expiry date of the certificate.<br />
<br />
You are now ready to test the certificate is installed correctly<br />
<br />
Any connections made over the https:// is secure now]]></content:encoded>

			<description><![CDATA[I have written a little script that will help new users to get on board with Ajax and dynamic page content. This is only a very basic script which will show you just how you can use Ajax to change a html page content. The script is in two parts part one which is the html page and the second part is a php script to control what data is to be displayed. I have used a very basic if statement on the php, a more advanced script could be produced selecting data from a database or such.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.web-application-development.info/examples/ajax/ajax.html" target="_blank">Working example </a><br />
<br />
Part 1<br />
This is the html page so you may call this page anything you wish. i have called it ajax.html<br />
<div class="codeblock">
<div class="title">Code:<br />
</div><div class="body" dir="ltr"><code>&lt;html&gt;<br />
&lt;head&gt;<br />
&lt;script type="text/javascript"&gt;<br />

if (window.XMLHttpRequest)<br />
&nbsp;&nbsp;{// code for IE7+, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Safari<br />
&nbsp;&nbsp;xmlhttp=new XMLHttpRequest();<br />
&nbsp;&nbsp;}<br />
else<br />
&nbsp;&nbsp;{// code for IE6, IE5<br />
&nbsp;&nbsp;xmlhttp=new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP");<br />
&nbsp;&nbsp;}<br />
xmlhttp.onreadystatechange=function()<br />
&nbsp;&nbsp;{<br />
&nbsp;&nbsp;if (xmlhttp.readyState==4 &amp;&amp; xmlhttp.status==200)<br />
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;{<br />
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;document.getElementById("showData").innerHTML=xmlhttp.responseText;<br />
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;}<br />
&nbsp;&nbsp;}<br />
xmlhttp.open("GET","getdata.php?q="+str,true);<br />
xmlhttp.send();<br />
}<br />
&lt;/script&gt;<br />
&lt;/head&gt;<br />
&lt;body&gt;<br />
&lt;table width="800" border="1"&gt;<br />
&lt;tr&gt;&lt;td colspan="2"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;center&gt;&lt;h2&gt;Dynamically change page content with Ajax &amp;amp; PHP&lt;/h2&gt;&lt;/center&gt;&lt;/td&gt;<br />

&lt;tr&gt;<br />
&lt;td width="200"&gt;<br />
&lt;form&gt;<br />
&lt;select name="Data" onChange="showData(this.value)"&gt;<br />
&lt;option value=""&gt;Select page Content:&lt;/option&gt;<br />
&lt;option value="1"&gt;Page Content 1&lt;/option&gt;<br />
&lt;option value="2"&gt;Page Content 2&lt;/option&gt;<br />

&lt;option value="4"&gt;Page Content 4&lt;/option&gt;<br />

&lt;/table&gt;<br />
<br />
&lt;/body&gt;<br />
&lt;/html&gt;</code></div></div>
<br />
Part 2<br />
This is the PHP script that stipulates what each page content contains. I have used four very basic if statements but as you can see a lot more advanced page content could be inserted here. I have called this page getdata.php if you change the name of this page you must change the name in the function on the ajax.html page.<br />
<div class="codeblock phpcodeblock"><div class="title">PHP Code:<br />

			<description><![CDATA[Over a year ago now I wondered how hard it would be to produce a search engine with its own spider bot to index the internet on a daily bases. I asked a lot of webmaster their opinion and the responses I got back where not what I was expecting. All of the responses where slightly different but all said the same basic thing. It would takes years and cost thousands of pounds if not into the hundreds of thousands; and why would you want to.<br />
<br />
I took all what was said to me on board and put it to the back of my mind. A few weeks later I was offered a little bit of work and would I go see the company. I went down to see them and when I got there I found out that the company had produced a search engine. I asked a few details about it while I was there. I was told it had cost the 5 million pounds, took 3 years to produce and 9 developers working flat out on the project.<br />
<br />
After I got home I had a look at the search engine they had build. Nothing special, just like every other search engine to be honest. I went back to one of the webmasters I had previously asked for some more advice. Where to start. Again he asked why would you want to. I simply told him that while my 6 year old daughter had been doing her home work on the internet she came across a website with some very disturbing content. Internet safe guards cannot protect you from everything so I think there should be a child safe search engine. He replied in my opinion I wouldn’t bother but if you must you must try.<br />
<br />
I searched the internet for the next day or so for search engines. There are a few now that are aimed at children with their design and layout all of which return very strong and sometimes illegal content. I spend the next week further researching how to build a search engine. After a week I wasn’t getting very far at all.<br />
<br />
I won’t go into technical details as to give away how the search engine and the spider work but here is how I started.<br />
<br />
I need a web page with a search form, I need a results page, I need a bespoke content management system and I need a spider to index the internet.<br />
I broke these down into headers and started to write a little more text to how and what each one should do.<br />
The first fully working test I produced seemed to work, took 8 months but had a lot of problems, I got 20 people to test it for a few weeks and give me their feedback. I was almost there the next release was a month later, the problems where fixed but fixing them had produced more problems.<br />
By now I had amended the code so much I couldn’t understand it properly. So I saved the files into a folder and opened a new folder with a clean workspace. I then extracted code bit by bit from the old site to the new site. It was working, testing each part as I went. I spent the next month working 14 hours a day. I had got there, it was done. A little over a year and I had managed it.<br />
<br />
I have launched the website now which was about 2 months ago. The local papers had produced a lovely full page spread. <a href="http://www.mysafesearch.co.uk" target="_blank">A child safe search engine</a> which returns no adult content but still returns content for children and what most adults would search for. I am currently working on a pay per click advertising system for the site so I can generate a income to keep this website running. The spider bot which is called MySafeSearchBot is indexing nearly 50 thousand web pages a week. There are over 80 searches a day done through this search engine. Please feel free to submit your website to it, save my spider some energy on finding you. Please also feel free to give me your comments.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.mysafesearch.co.uk" target="_blank">My Safe Search - A child safe search engine</a><br />
<br />
Occasionally it does slow down a little to about 6 seconds for search results. This is down to the server. I had to put it on one of my cheaper servers to save costs until it was fully working.]]></description>

			<description><![CDATA[Do you want your own forum? If you have ever wanted your own forum where you and other people of similar interests can discuss topics but don’t know how to start. Then look no further. <br />
<br />
Setting up a forum a simple task. You could have a forum just like this one in a matter of hours. That includes your hosting and domain name. this forum was created in less than 3 hours. That included setting up the hosting package, the domain name and installing the script. Another hour was spend on configuring the script and adding the updates. The forum was then open and ready to use.<br />

			<guid isPermaLink="false">http://www.web-application-development.info/Thread-UK-Landlord-Registry</guid>
			<description><![CDATA[I started work on this website a few months back. I have friends who are landlords and over the years I have constantly seen then struggling with tenants that abscond owing money, destroy the flats they have been renting.<br />
<br />
I really don’t know how they make money at times after talking one night two of them had said I would be a good idea if there was a delinquent tenants list where landlords could see how bad a tenant has been before. Similar to what credit companies use.<br />
<br />
I started looking into this and found that a service like this can be done. The site is called <a href="http://www.uklandlordregistry.co.uk" target="_blank">UK Landlord registry</a> and landlords and letting agencies can register to perform searches against prospective tenants and search the last 6 years rental history, request references for tenants that currently have no data present, register their own tenants that have broken tenancy agreements, register good tenant references for other landlords to see. They can also list all the properties that they have available for rent <a href="http://www.uklandlordregistry.co.uk/findaproperty/" target="_blank">Find a Property</a>. Tenants can then search the list by area to find properties in the area they want to live. All this for a small fee of £60 per year.<br />
<br />
I also decided that I would be a good idea for landlords to be able to perform credit checks on their tenants so this service was included. (I had to add an additional fee for this though) and while I was implementing that and speaking to credit reference agencies I found I could also add a service where landlords can trace tenants that have absconded. Similar to how a debt collection agency traces people. (also an additional fee).<br />
<br />
Please have a look at the website and let me know any thoughts you have. <a href="http://www.uklandlordregistry.co.uk" target="_blank">UK Landlord Registry</a>]]></description>
